Cushion vs. Pneumatic: The Breakdown

The most common option for forklift tires is pneumatic or cushion. These two types have advantages in different environments, and choosing the right one improves handling, safety, and increases the tires life span. Each tire is built for specific Toyota forklift models and their applications. Educating yourself on this topic will make shopping for a new lift truck much easier, and you will have peace of mind knowing your next forklift is prepared to meet your needs.

PNEUMATIC TIRES

Opertaors use pneumatic forklift tires for outdoor applications like lumber yards, ports, rail yards, and construction sites. These tires perform great on tough or uneven terrain. Pneumatic tires are filled with air or are solid rubber.

Air Pneumatics are cheaper, and but they are less durable and won’t last as long. Solid Pneumatic tires are extremely durable and can’t be punctured by sharp objects, making them the ideal option for most outdoor applications. However, they may provide a rougher ride than air pneumatics.

Pneumatic Forklift Tires

Cushion forklift tires are a solid rubber ring that gets pressed onto a metal rim. Cushion tires are designed for indoor applications like factories or warehouses. They are cheaper to maintain and replace than pneumatic tires.

Cushion tires have poor traction compared to pneumatic tires, but are better at handling in tight spaces, and have a smaller turning radius. They are easier and quicker to maneuver in narrow aisles within warehouses. Cushion tires are very durable when used in proper environments.

WHAT CONDITION DO CUSHION AND SOLID TIRES OPERATE BEST ON?

Solid pneumatic tires can be used on outdoor and indoor surfaces. However, they are good for areas with lots of debris, such as lumber yards. They are also better suited for poor weather.

Pneumatic tires can be used in both indoor and outdoor applications. They are the best choice for areas with a lot of debris such as lumber yards, scrap yards, and construction sites.

CAN YOU PUT PNEUMATIC FORKLIFT TIRES ON A CUSHION TIRE FORKLIFT?

The answer is generally no. This is because lift trucks are designed with specific forklift wheel configurations. Also, the forklift tires are built with certain frames and lifting capacities. Switching between cushion and pneumatic can lead to safety concerns. However, you may be able to swap a smooth cushion tire for a traction one. Another option is to go from press-on tires to solid forklift tires.

HOW TO PICK BETWEEN PNEUMATIC AND CUSHION TIRES?

Pneumatic forklift tires are designed for outdoor applications like lumber yards, ports, rail yards, and construction sites. These tires perform great on tough or uneven terrain. Pneumatic tires are filled with air or are completely solid rubber.

Air Pneumatics are cheaper and but they are less durable and won’t last as long. Solid Pneumatic tires are extremely durable and can’t be punctured by sharp objects, making them the ideal option for most outdoor applications. However, they may provide a rougher ride than air pneumatics. Need help with your decisions? Contact us below.
